Permanent Care Renewal

The Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) is the official proof of permanent resident status in Canada and an essential travel document for returning to Canada. If the PR card is about to expire or has already expired, permanent residents must apply for a renewal to ensure their status remains valid and to facilitate travel.

Who Can Apply for PR Card Renewal

  • Individuals who currently hold a valid or expired PR card.

  • Those who meet the requirements for maintaining permanent resident status, including residency obligations.

  • Applicants who are residing in Canada and intend to continue living as permanent residents.

Key Requirements for PR Card Renewal

  1. Residency Obligation

    • Applicants must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within the last 5 years before applying for renewal.

    • The 730 days can include:

      • Actual time spent in Canada.

      • Time spent outside Canada accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or parent.

      • Time spent working for a Canadian company or being posted abroad (must provide supporting documents).

  2. Valid Permanent Resident Status

    • The applicant must maintain permanent resident status and must not have been issued a removal order or lost their status.

  3. Provide Sufficient Supporting Documents

    • Documents may include copies of the passport, proof of residency, and travel records.

Special Circumstance

  1. Expired PR Card While Outside Canada

    • If the PR card has expired and the applicant is outside Canada, they can apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return to Canada.

  2. Not Meeting Residency Obligations

    • If the applicant has not fulfilled the 730-day residency requirement but has compelling reasons (e.g., uncontrollable circumstances or humanitarian reasons), they may explain the situation and submit supporting evidence to IRCC.
