Grant of Citizenship

Canadian citizenship refers to the process through which eligible permanent residents apply to become Canadian citizens. Upon obtaining citizenship, applicants gain full citizenship rights, including holding a Canadian passport, participating in elections, and enjoying other citizenship privileges.

Key Requirements for Citizenship Application

To apply for Canadian citizenship, applicants must meet the following basic requirements:

  1. Permanent Resident Status

    • Applicants must be a permanent resident (PR) of Canada, and their PR status must still be valid at the time of application.

  2. Physical Presence Requirement

    • Applicants must have lived in Canada for at least 3 years (1,095 days) within the past 5 years before applying.

    • Time spent in Canada as a permanent resident or, in certain cases (e.g., as a temporary resident), legal presence in Canada may be counted (up to a maximum of 365 days).

  3. Filing Tax Returns

    • Applicants must have filed income tax returns for at least 3 years within the 5 years preceding the application (if applicable).

  4. Language Proficiency

    • Applicants aged 18 to 54 must demonstrate basic proficiency in English or French (CLB 4 or above).

    • Language requirements can be met through language tests (e.g., IELTS, TEF) or educational credentials.

  5. Citizenship Test

    • Applicants aged 18 to 54 must pass a citizenship test to demonstrate basic knowledge of:

      • Canada's history, values, institutions, and symbols.

      • The rights and responsibilities of citizens.

    • The test is conducted in English or French and may be written or oral (if required).

  6. Good Character

    • Applicants must have good moral character and no serious criminal record or violations of immigration laws.

 

Citizenship Application Process

  1. Prepare the Application Materials

    • Complete the appropriate application form (based on age and circumstances).

    • Provide supporting documents such as a permanent resident card (PR card), language proficiency proof, physical presence calculator, and tax documents (e.g., Notices of Assessment).

  2. Submit the Application

    • Submit the application materials and fees online to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

  3. Background Check and Application Processing

    • IRCC will review the applicant's background, residency, and tax records.

  4. Attend Citizenship Test and Interview (if applicable)

    • Once the test is passed, applicants will receive instructions for the next steps.

  5. Attend the Citizenship Ceremony

    • Approved applicants must attend the citizenship ceremony and take the oath to officially become Canadian citizens.
